Obsidian dev open-sources Pele, a Mermaid-compatible renderer 100-500x faster than mermaid.js
aronchick · x · 2026-10-18
kepano, creator of Obsidian, released Pele, an open-source (MIT) rendering library for diagrams and charts, compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax. It will become the built-in renderer in the next Obsidian version.
Key claims: 100-500x faster than mermaid.js, 6x smaller bundle, zero dependencies, easy theming, and responsive to device width. He says Mermaid was always too big, too slow, and too hard to theme, so he rewrote it in pursuit of a fast, cohesive Obsidian. A playground is available to try now.
