Natural stimuli make V1 responses dirty via population effects
HistedLab · x · 2026-10-17
Citing Deveau et al. from his lab and work by C. Gilbert, HistedLab explains the apparent contradiction: simple cells appear in V1 when recording singly with simple grating patches, but under natural visual stimuli, population/net effects make neural responses dirty — clean receptive fields may largely be artifacts of measurement conditions.
