Voice AI product lead on where Jev-style classifier models actually fit in phone bots

A Head of Product at a voice AI orchestration platform draws on hundreds of commercial deployments per year to map where classifier models belong in phone bots.
History
- Pre-LLM (2022–2024) teams built intent classifiers to cheaply extract caller intent and entities; some still run today.
- LLMs briefly made classifiers look obsolete, but mid-size models hallucinated under long prompts or topic switches, while large models wrecked per-conversation cost or latency.
- Production takeaway: no single model carries a full conversation — you need multi-stage bots, router models, and scripted flows.
What Jev is
- TypeSafe's fast classifier (early access since Sept 2026): takes state + questions, returns typed structured answers (option choice, short-scale score, yes/no probability); no text generation.
- Latency: under 500ms across measurements (35 questions in 170ms in one case; 332–892ms in another; vendor claims 70–500ms).
Ecosystem
- Laya: most-used free open-source alternative (Apache 2.0, from a Convai Innovations researcher).
- Clef: Cloudflare's open ultra-fast decision model.
- CMF: 304.5MB lightweight open model, millisecond answers, no text generation.
- Bespoke Nimble: an "open Jev" recipe — LoRA on Qwen3.5-9B with constrained decoding.
Core argument: classifiers aren't obsolete — they're returning as an engineering layer under the cost/latency/reliability triangle.
