Study of 357K science posts: Bluesky discourse is more academic, X is easier to read
CurieuxExplorer · x · 2026-10-17
A Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics study compared 8,697 Bluesky posts and 348,900 X posts mentioning science over a matched window, both restricted to English text from posting accounts.
Key findings:
- Both platforms cover similar science topics (health, biology, engineering), but language differs markedly
- X posts are easier to read (Flesch-Kincaid grade 9.07 vs 10.02), address readers more directly (second-person pronouns 0.0153 vs 0.0093), and have lower complex-word density
- Bluesky posts are longer, more concentrated within a single discipline (field isolation 0.6882 vs 0.6200), use more first-person pronouns, and are more often classified as academic
The authors interpret this as more peer-oriented scientific discourse on Bluesky versus audience-oriented dissemination on X, noting that audience composition was not directly measured.
