Claude Code silently syncs claude.ai skills to local machines, adding ~10k tokens per session
phatstackzdevops · reddit · 2026-10-17
A senior developer found Claude Code had automatically synced nearly 700 skill and plugin files from his claude.ai account into /.claude/skills/synced/ and /.claude/plugins/synced/, adding 10,000 tokens to every session start. The feature is controlled by a server-side flag (tenguclaudeaiskillssyncenabled), introduced in September and only briefly mentioned in the changelog, then silently enabled days ago. He also recounts an earlier incident where Anthropic force-updated his pinned binary and enrolled it in an A/B experiment cached locally and sent via an x-cc-atis header, causing hours of debugging. His core complaint: server-side flags shouldn't silently modify a developer's local environment without notification.
