Laude open-sources Headlong: a sub-10K-line Bash microharness for agents that never stop thinking
lateinteraction · x · 2026-10-17
Laude Institute (in collaboration with MIT) released Headlong, an open-source agent "microharness" built around persistent agency, with a core of under 10K lines of Bash on GitHub.
Key design contrast:
- Most harnesses are reactive: the agent works until a task is done, then freezes until the next request; cron-style harnesses wake on schedule to run fixed checklists.
- Headlong's agent never sleeps and has no checklist unless it creates one — it continuously generates thoughts in a self-guided loop inspired by human inner monologue. A human message is just another observation landing in the thought stream, not a session trigger.
The authors found such persistently thinking agents especially engaging for team/multi-player use since they behave more like a person. The write-up also covers what broke, costs, and how they measured improvement.
