Hacktoberfest 2026 pivots to open-weight AI: 500+ events, 3,000 projects in week one

Hacktoberfest 2026 shifted its theme to open-weight models and open-source AI. Organizers expected 300 in-person gatherings; over 500 Fests are now planned across 60+ countries, with more than 3,000 projects submitted in the first week. On day one, students at COMSATS University in Pakistan built a locally hosted hospital-management platform, a multimodal companion for visually impaired users, and an onboarding tool for first-time open-source contributors.
