CS venues cited as rare model of polycentric self-governance against AI disruption
xuanalogue · x · 2026-10-17
The author argues that despite their many problems, ML conference venues are a remarkable example of polycentric self-governance by a scientific community: not owned by publishing corporations, steered by rotating academics, quick to adapt and experiment with policy, with new venues often created to fill emerging needs.
Quoting a thread on institutions protecting the knowledge commons from AI-caused problems, the author hopes these decentralized norms spread and more experimentation follows on how to address the issue.
