a16z: 1 in 3 Americans bought via AI recommendation as retailers block agents

a16z's Charts of the Week highlights two trends:
AI is reshaping purchasing (Statista Consumer Insights, Jan–Sep 2026):
- Over 1 in 3 Americans bought something based on an AI recommendation in the past year (16% once, 21% multiple times)
- 44% say AI helps them find better value; 41% would buy AI-recommended unknown brands; 39% say AI boosts purchase completion
- 34% would pay more if AI showed the best option
"Agents Denied": Cloudflare data shows the share of 403 Forbidden responses served to agents and bots has roughly doubled since summer. Big etailers like Amazon are instablocking agent shoppers to avoid disintermediation, loss of customer relationships and ad revenue — with return rates doubling since 2019, return costs tripling, and dispute-abuse fraud adding to their wariness of agentic commerce.
