Terry Tao's Four Types of Mathematization: Heavy AI Use Needs Strong Human Understanding
ravithejads · x · 2026-10-17
At the SAIR Foundation's Science x AI Summit 2026, Terence Tao laid out a 2×2 framework for math before and after AI: crossing degree of AI use (light/heavy) with degree of human understanding (weak/strong) yields Pre-math, Misaligned math, Math 1.0, and Math 2.0.
His key point: a lack of human understanding of a real-world system isn't inherently dangerous — it just means the field isn't yet mathematized. But when that lack of understanding combines with AI's optimizing power, misalignment can occur — hence his coinage "misaligned math." Human understanding is the key variable for reaping AI's benefits while avoiding its pitfalls.
