SentryWard: 32 of 85 sampled GPU kernels harbor race and sync bugs, formal verification for AI-generated code

Researchers including Mengdi Wu, Oded Padon, and Zhihao Jia introduce SentryWard, tackling correctness of AI-agent-generated GPU kernels. They analyzed 85 kernels from popular libraries and found 32 with potential data races, synchronization bugs, or resource lifetime violations. Modern kernels rely on async memory transfers, tensor cores, and complex synchronization; one missing barrier can silently corrupt data or deadlock. Bugs can hide in rare execution schedules — a kernel may pass 100,000 tests yet fail. SentryWard applies formal verification to GPU kernels.
