peekme: open-source tool explains any selected text inside coding agent terminals
Key_Recognition_8112 · reddit · 2026-10-17
peekme is a small free open-source tool that lets you select any text in your coding agent's terminal, press Alt+P, and read a short explanation right below it; Esc closes it and restores the screen.
- Works in Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Kiro CLI and more; the author plans to support any terminal (man pages, build logs).
- Alt+Q lets you ask your own follow-up questions, with nested selections inside answers to arbitrary depth; asked-about words stay underlined and clickable even after resuming a chat.
- Runs on your agent's own login, no API key; tested on Linux/macOS, inside tmux and over SSH; Windows not yet supported.
- Install: npm i -g peekme && peekme install.
Written in Rust with heavy Claude Code assistance — the hard part was parsing how each agent draws its screen so boxes scroll with the chat, plus end-to-end tests launching real agents. The demo screenshot shows an agent walking through EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) diagnostics for a slow Postgres query.
