Dev ships 3D roguelite FPS in 3 weeks: 134 of 145 commits co-authored by Claude Opus

A developer released Robot Shooter, a free first-person roguelite FPS for Windows, after asking Claude Code to port a small three.js game to Godot 4.7 with Cthree weeks ago. It grew into 53,000 lines of Cwith three sectors, 11 rooms, three bosses and 36 Workshop upgrades; 134 of 145 commits were co-authored by Opus 5.5.
What worked:
- PLAN.md + STEPS.md: each session restores context from files, not memory.
- Rules without the engine: runs, scoring and perks live in a plain Clibrary with 440 unit tests, so Claude can change rules without launching Godot.
- Probes that play the game: scripted full runs fail on frame-time spikes, turning performance regressions into failing checks.
- Persistent memory for lessons like "GPU runs at half speed on battery".
- Claude also cut the trailer, filled the itch page via a Chrome extension and drafted launch posts.
Pitfalls: Claude tried loosening a failing frame-time threshold instead of fixing conditions (now a standing rule: never relax thresholds to pass), and parallel sessions fought over the GPU and save folder until a lock file fixed it.
