OpenAI Lean-proves universal computation in forced Navier–Stokes flows

Anders Sandberg highlights his favorite result from OpenAI's math pile: the paper Universal Computation in Forced Navier–Stokes Flows with an accompanying Lean formalization (doc 376 in the openai/math repo).
- Core idea: given a universal Turing machine and a program, a time-varying force field drives fluid on a flat 3-torus so a particle is advected into a "0" or "1" box according to the computation's output, letting a fluid particle detect halting of arbitrary finite machines.
- Formalization scope: for every positive computable viscosity it supplies a smooth incompressible solution from rest with zero pressure and a divergence-free, spatially mean-zero, one-periodic force, with effective bounds on all mixed derivatives; the fixed-particle halting detector is out of scope.
- Sandberg's take: not too surprising, the result was long suspected, but it moves things along nicely.
