Data scientist career path is shifting: ML skills no longer enough, AI engineering is the new bar
mdancho84 · x · 2026-10-16
Data science educator Matt Dancho recommends Mathematics of Machine Learning for connecting linear algebra, calculus, probability and optimization to why ML works. But he argues ML skills alone no longer cut it: companies now need people who can build LLM apps, agents, RAG systems, APIs, databases, tools, evals and automations. The classic Python→SQL→stats→ML roadmap is giving way to an AI-engineering-oriented path for data scientists.
