Why DJI alumni founded 17 funded startups last year: China's hardware mafia
创业邦 · wechat · 2026-10-16
IC Lab analyzes the "DJI mafia" phenomenon: 17 startups founded by DJI alumni raised funding last year alone, with VCs renting offices near DJI headquarters to track departures. The success of Bamboo Lab (30% of global consumer 3D printing) and Unitree cemented the brand; Acmor Robotics, Astribot, EcoFlow and others are also competitive.
Two departure waves: the 2017-2020 plateau and anti-fraud reorganization produced early founders (EcoFlow's Wang Lei, Bamboo Lab's Tao Ye); in 2025, technical backbone left en masse for Insta360/Dreame or embodied AI startups.
The DJI imprint: team-based founding (Bamboo Lab's team spans DJI hardware, supply chain, algorithms) and a "usability-first" methodology — don't ship until it's consumer-ready, plus strong supply-chain control, budget SKUs to ignite mass markets, and overseas focus.
DJI itself thrives because talent churn is part of its management philosophy; VCs are effectively paying for the organizational culture and playbooks of China's tech giants.
