Autonomous vehicle demo shows car reversing to break narrow-road deadlock, with a robotic arm to shift gears

An autonomous driving engineer describes building on-demand reversing into motion planning and decision policies for L5 capability. In a test, a single-lane road was blocked with obstacles and an oncoming car held the center without yielding — the only solution was for the AV to reverse, find a left shoulder spot, and pull over.
- An upcoming full demo video will compare a classical motion planning algorithm against a deep reinforcement learning policy
- The test vehicle is automatic, so the team built a robotic manipulator to shift between drive and reverse like a human driver
