Coordinating parallel Claude Code sessions with git notes as a shared timeline
Aryvyo · x · 2026-10-16
Running multiple Claude Code sessions in parallel, the author replaced noisy inter-session status messages with git notes: each session appends what it did to a timeline notes ref (no commits, no history pollution), and a SessionStart hook injects a time-sorted 20-line digest of recent commits+notes into every new or compacted session's context.
Key steps:
- Write: git notes --ref=timeline append -m "timestamp [room] status" HEAD
- Display in log: git config notes.displayRef refs/notes/timeline
- Read: a 40-line Python script in a SessionStart hook walks repos and merges git log --branches --tags with notes listing (use --branches --tags, not --all, to avoid noise)
- CLAUDE.md rule: check the timeline before starting, leave a note when finishing, direct-message only for urgent handoffs
Results: status pings mostly gone, reviewer sessions can detect duplicate work without message history, and the timeline survives compaction/restarts with zero extra infrastructure.
Caveats: notes don't push by default (git push origin refs/notes/ needed for remote sync); keep startup output short or you pay tokens on every session start.
