A new arXiv paper, "Aligning LLMs with Sparse Retrieval via Adaptive Sparse Supervision," presents an LLM-based sparse retrieval framework:
- Method: A dynamic α-truncation strategy selects input-specific supervision supports based on the cumulative activation mass of SPLADE representations, guiding the LLM to preserve salient lexical signals while suppressing uninformative activations — without a fixed support budget. Retrieval fine-tuning then combines contrastive learning, knowledge distillation and sparsity regularization.
- Results: On MS MARCO and six BEIR datasets it improves over SPLADE++; versus Lion-sp it cuts index storage by 6.4x and end-to-end query latency by over 11x, achieving a strong effectiveness-efficiency trade-off.
