SEO consultant Gagan Ghotra proposes a minimal fix: Google could append utmsource=ai-mode, gemini, or ai-overviews to citation URLs in its AI search surfaces. That single change would let the SEO industry precisely measure how much actual traffic AI Mode, Gemini, and AI Overviews send to their pages — arguably the easiest thing Google could do to solve AI search attribution today.
