Pointing models at their own brains may be the ultimate dual-use technology
tenobrus · x · 2026-10-16
The author argues something should be obvious: pointing models at their own internal states, getting them to accurately understand what's happening, and letting them make changes that cause large shifts in behavior and capabilities is among the most dual-use technologies imaginable. It could serve interpretability and alignment — or be used to boost capability and evade control. Replying, another argues self-interpretation is the only method that works at the limit, since frontier models will eventually exceed what humans or smaller models can interpret or control.
