DugUp: local file search by content, OCR, meaning and image likeness (alpha)
Intraluminal · reddit · 2026-10-16
A developer released DugUp (alpha), a from-scratch Python app for Windows 11 and Linux that finds files by what's inside them — full text via SQLite FTS5, OCR in photos/scans with location highlighting, semantic search and image-likeness search via ONNX models — all fully local.
Highlights:
- Global Win+Shift+F hotkey opens files instantly from any app
- Near-duplicate photo cleanup (resized copies, re-saves, second shots) with rule-based keeper selection, undo, and a record before every change
- Camera-named pictures can be renamed by what they show, with preview and undo
- Background indexing waits for mains power and never takes every core
Known alpha limitations: only one person has used the UI for real, a whole search still runs on the window's thread, the index isn't encrypted, and there's no stated ceiling for dedup beyond 100k pictures. PolyForm Noncommercial license.
