Meta's AI chief slams benchmarks: 'outsourcing product thinking to a viral benchmark'
agihippo · x · 2026-10-16
Meta's head of AI publicly criticized AI benchmarks: "it's some PhD student who made these benchmarks" and "you're kind of outsourcing all of your product thinking to this viral benchmark — so clearly that's wrong."
Commentary adds context: the industry moved so fast that proper benchmarking never got established; companies used whatever was available, competitors had to chase the same benchmarks, and some became de facto standards — meaning today's measures of AI progress carry a lot of randomness and chance.
