Transluce vets: a year of neuron autointerp work still can't explain complex behaviors

Replying to aryaman2020, Vincent Huang says his team spent half of 2026 building on Transluce's neuron autointerp improvements and sparse neuron circuits work — and it was still insufficient for explaining complex model behaviors. The linked Transluce release (Oct 2024) is a database of descriptions for every neuron in Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct plus a finetuned explainer model: an 8B model generates human-expert-quality descriptions cheaply, enabling natural-language querying and steering of internal representations.
