A UPenn GRASP seminar talk by CMU assistant professor Andrea Bajcsy: "What Does Safety Mean for Generalist Robots?"
Core idea: robot safety is usually equated with collision avoidance, but generalist robots need a nuanced notion — knowing when they're not confident about a task, manipulating objects gently to avoid breaking or spilling, and avoiding burns from overheating.
Approach: uniting modern ML models (large vision-language models, latent world models) with classical control-theoretic safety formulations to generalize safe decision-making to open-world interactions, validated in vision-based robotic manipulation.
