AI existential risk is the fifth media-driven moral panic since 2000, argues Lewis

James Lewis argues AI existential risk is the fifth media-driven moral panic since 2000, resting on two tests: probability (no extreme prediction of the last 70 years came true, from peak oil to famine by 2000) and process (a hypothetical risk only becomes real once you can name the steps, and no one connects superintelligence to mass casualties without routing through an existing weapon). He likens it to nuclear winter: a real danger extended into an improbable scenario. He accepts frontier systems are error-prone — grid failures plausible, mass-casualty events not.
