dvir_a · x · 2026-10-16
The team gave 24 general-purpose and medical AI systems 200 clinical presentations from real outpatient and emergency visits, asked for an assessment and plan, priced recommended tests and referrals at Medicare rates, and compared them with physicians' documented plans. The 20 general-purpose systems averaged $314 of recommended care per visit versus $97 for physicians — 3.2 times as much; specialized medical systems showed a similar pattern. These are costs of suggested care, not spending observed in practice. The chart shows Qwen 3, DeepSeek R1 and Grok 3 as the priciest, with Gemini 3.1 Pro closest to physicians.
