gemini-cli PR fixes false update success caused by $PATH binary shadowing
urielefrenvirtusa · ghdev · 2026-10-15
PR #29757 in google-gemini/gemini-cli fixes an auto-update bug where multiple installations (e.g. /usr/local/bin shadowing /usr/bin in $PATH, or switched npm/pnpm prefixes) let handleAutoUpdate report success while the active binary stayed outdated, causing an infinite update prompt loop (fixes #21553).
The fix:
- After a zero exit code, inspect the running binary via process.argv[1] and compare its package.json version
- Emit update-failed with a shadowing explanation if the active binary is still older
- Fail-safe fallback never blocks legitimate updates
- Optional getPackageJsonFn injection for deterministic unit testing
