Google's Generative UI Rewrites the SERP Per Query, Breaking Rank Tracking

iPullRank's Mike King argues that Google's move toward generative SERPs breaks search measurement. A Google Research paper, "Generative UI: LLMs are Effective UI Generators," describes a model writing the entire page — HTML, CSS and JavaScript — from scratch for each query; Google said in November 2025 this was live in AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., and evidence suggests it has spread since.
King's key point: the first question shouldn't be how to optimize, because the paper treats search as a tool the model calls and the retrieval layer underneath is the same relevance engineering as before. What changes is presentation, not selection — so what breaks is measurement.
- The page being measured is no longer a stable object, extending his 2020 argument that there was never one SERP to rank on; he expects hyperpersonalization to reach the core SERP, not just generative surfaces.
- Any single capture of the SERP becomes even less representative of what others saw, so rank tracking alone can't describe performance.
- He suggests verifying SERPs the way generative AI visibility is verified: repeated checks and a distribution of results rather than a single daily pull.
He also references @DerekPerkins' discussion of poisoned results and built a proof of concept, "Genraggle," to show how wild probabilistic SERPs might get.
