Local RAG pipeline: retrieval sets the ceiling, not the model
Arindam_1729 · x · 2026-10-16
A developer shares a fully local RAG pipeline on a laptop: 3 txt files, chunk size 500/overlap 50, nomic-embed-text via Ollama, Chroma vector DB, top-3 retrieval, Gemma 4 E4B answering only from retrieved chunks. Key insight: retrieval sets the ceiling—if the right sentence isn't in the chunks, a bigger LLM just hallucinates more confidently, so debug retrieval first. Local means zero API cost for unlimited reruns. A companion post builds a fully offline 6GB agent with Gemma 4 E4B, Ollama, Chroma, LangChain and Streamlit, noting the cloud-to-local switch is nearly a one-line change.
