Codex desktop update hard-fails new chats when DeviceCheck attestation is unavailable
bakira99 · ghdev · 2026-10-09
A user reports that OpenAI's ChatGPT/Codex desktop app (26.1002.52244, macOS on Apple Silicon) fails every new chat with "Failed to load workspace settings" after the update. Logs show DeviceCheck token generation has been unavailable on the machine (with ECC signature verification failures), which older builds tolerated gracefully — but the new build makes GET /accounts/check hard-fail with a 500 when integrity state can't be attached. Existing sessions and the Codex CLI still work. The reporter asks OpenAI to restore a fallback or actionable error, highlighting that stricter device attestation can lock out machines with broken Apple certificate issuance.
