Geoffrey Huntley proposes the Remix Model: closed to PRs, open to remixing
kieranklaassen · x · 2026-10-15
Open source developer Geoffrey Huntley frames a new collaboration model — "The Remix Model" — and says he'll disable pull requests on his GitHub projects going forward, keeping discussions open and publishing remix guidance.
Key points:
- Structure: decentralized and compositional; changes spread as independent Nix overlays instead of converging on one repo and maintainer.
- Workflow: publish source and intent under an as-is license; consumers express changes once in a small Nix overlay reused across dev shells, Docker images, NixOS, CI and agent sandboxes — no forking.
- Principle: ideas over patches. The valuable unit is a behavioral/architectural change; maintainers choose to adopt, reimplement, or ignore it, with no obligation to review.
- Social contract: the license already permits remixing without claims on anyone's time; credit can exist, maintenance duty doesn't.
- Example: to disable Git force-push in a project, write an overlay patching Git rather than filing an upstream PR.
The argument fits the agent era: when AI can compose overlays automatically, the PR-burden model of open source may need rethinking.
