SCOUT fixes on-policy distillation's teacher problem by adapting teachers to student prefixes
mangahomanga · x · 2026-10-15
On-policy distillation lets students learn from reasoning paths they actually visit, but has a teacher problem: teachers must supervise paths they rarely take themselves, and their token feedback becomes unreliable as paths grow longer.
SCOUT (Student-COnditioned Updates of the Teacher) solves this by adapting the teacher to student prefixes — teacher and student learn together.
