Cisco firewall console bug CVE-2026-20079 grants unauthenticated root access

- Management interfaces must handle web requests before authenticating, so bugs on that path can render strong passwords and MFA on the login page irrelevant.
- CVE-2026-20079 in Cisco's firewall management console (FMC) lets attackers bypass authentication with crafted HTTP requests and execute commands as root, traced to an improper system process created at boot.
- The console can manage other firewalls too, so compromising it means attackers can rewrite firewall rules.
- Mitigation (illustrated in the diagram): restrict who can reach the interface pre-authentication — put the console on a private overlay network (NetBird/WireGuard with SSO+MFA), no open public port, admin-only access policies.
