New York City will invest $30 million to build the QFab quantum technology lab at NYU, in exchange for 15% of proceeds from IP developed there, three board seats, and payouts on any M&A or IPO of spinout firms — the first deal from Mayor Mamdani's restructured Economic Development Corporation, replacing traditional tax-break-based incentives. Government equity stakes in private industry, once rare, are becoming normalized, as seen with the Commerce Department's 8% option in Westinghouse.
