COMPASS predicts model-pair compatibility before alignment or merging
epfl-ch · hf · 2026-10-15
EPFL researchers propose COMPASS (COMPatibility ASsessment Score), a theoretically motivated diagnostic that estimates whether a model pair will be compatible before costly alignment or merging. It decomposes compatibility into two cheap-to-compute axes — pair-specific ease (k-NN overlap between encoders) and a paradigm-level ceiling — enabling ranking of candidate pairs and smarter resource allocation.
