AIES paper: Sustaining responsible AI practice requires treating it as a "moral mission"
ChinasaTOkolo · x · 2026-10-15
A phenomenological qualitative study presented at the 2026 AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES) interviewed 15 self-identified responsible data scientists and AI practitioners to understand what it takes to maintain professional responsible practice.
The paper notes that despite a growing ecosystem of techniques, toolkits, and guidelines for considering the social implications of data-driven technologies, professional data scientists still struggle to consistently adopt responsible practice even when given these resources. The authors argue the key to sustained responsible practice is approaching it as a "moral mission"—a conviction-driven technical practice seeking to transform social conditions by any degree possible—and surface how practitioners actually make moral decisions in daily work.
