Anthropic ditches Git for in-house Scion as AI agents push daily merges from 2,500 to 30,000+

Anthropic's engineering blog reveals that AI-generated code forced a fundamental infrastructure rethink: daily merged changes in its monorepo grew from 2,500 in May to 30,000+ by September (30,401 on Sep 9), overwhelming Git infrastructure designed for human-scale teams.
Seven engineers built Scion, an in-house version control system, and fully migrated the monorepo off Git in five months — cutting infrastructure 200x and speeding up code checkouts 100x. A landmark case of agent-scale development forcing a rebuild of core developer infrastructure.
