Codex CLI fails behind proxies by default, but unrelated -c overrides fix it
Baifeng76 · ghdev · 2026-10-11
A bug report on openai/codex documents that Codex CLI 0.156.1–0.162.1 fails instantly at TUI bootstrap with account/read failed: workspace routing discovery failed (code -32603) in proxy-required environments — failing in 1.6s, inconsistent with a 15s timeout.
Controlled reproduction matrix:
- Plain codex fails under HTTP-only, SOCKS5-only, and mixed-port proxies
- Adding an apparently unrelated CLI override (e.g. -c 'logdir=...' or -c 'modelreasoningeffort="medium"') makes startup and model interaction succeed
- Setting logdir in config.toml doesn't help; deleting the config entirely still fails; without a proxy even the override fails
The author links the issue to #48600 and #49827. Tested on Ubuntu 22.04 headless Docker with ChatGPT auth — directly useful for developers running Codex behind corporate proxies.
