antirez open-sources pin-level Commodore 64 motherboard hardware simulator
antirez · x · 2026-10-15
antirez released c64-hw-sim, an open-source hardware-level simulator of the Commodore 64 motherboard (ASSY 250407), simulated pin-by-pin from the board's netlist.
- Users can lift chip legs, short pins to ground/+5V, pull chips, or open resistors, then observe the monitor output, keyboard, and board signals
- The simulator encodes only the circuit's connections and chip pin behavior — garbage screens from simulated faults are computed from the circuit, not hand-coded from expected results
- Example: lifting A7 of color RAM before power-on lets the machine boot seemingly healthy, while CPU writes and VIC reads subtly diverge
