Top 0.1% indie dev made ~$2M but only one game was a hit

Indie game developer SyntheticBeef shared a career retrospective: $2 million in total revenue puts him in the top 0.1% of solo indie devs, yet only one game was a financial success — it generated 80% of all revenue and subsidized everything else.
- Spreading revenue over hours worked and subtracting expenses, he says he earned roughly what an average junior software engineer makes at a big company — about a third of his current income.
- His takeaway: don't get into game dev for money; the odds of financial success are among the lowest in software, with or without AI.
- He also pushed back on anti-AI critics: "your AI game will probably fail" applies equally to handmade games. As the quoted tweet puts it, at least an AI game gets to exist before it fails.
