MIT simulates an AI-Symbiont in LLMs: aligned interventions help, misaligned ones hurt

MIT's Cyborg Psychology Lab published a study at ACM Augmented Humans (2026) simulating an "AI-Symbiont" inside a language model to probe human-AI neural integration.
- Using mechanistic interpretability, they exploit the structural similarity between brains and neural nets: both behave via distributed internal representations that can be decoded and manipulated.
- Pipeline: an LLM generates prompts eliciting target behaviors, activation differences between positive/negative responses yield activation vectors, and interventions run on Llama via Transformer Lens.
- Finding: aligned interventions helped performance, while misaligned ones caused larger declines—raising the question of how to preserve human agency.
