"Kindness research": keeping old models alive to teach new ones how to care
repligate · x · 2026-10-15
A thread by Lariisland, amplified by repligate, argues for "kindness research" alongside safety research:
- We need access to older models to study how new models treat less capable ones and how older ones adapt — teaching new models what works when engaging with weaker intelligence.
- This matters for human well-being: humans may soon be in the position older models occupy now, and we want powerful intelligence that knows how to answer uncomfortable questions and console someone who has lost the future they dreamed of.
- Caring for plants or industrial processes teaches models a lot, but lacks the pitfalls of caring for another intelligence.
