Niantic Spatial built VPS on Pokémon Go imagery; a dev already prototyped it solo

Jon Stephens notes he always assumed VPS (Visual Positioning System) only worked with massive imagery of a location — and Niantic Spatial pulled it off thanks to Pokémon Go. He quotes a Japanese developer's prototype: using AVATA 360 footage, implementing VPS map generation in a custom 360 MCConverter, and self-localization with a hand-written localizer. Still unstable, but built on classical CV with room to grow.
