Anthropic's Amanda Askell keeps returning to the Creature's plea in Frankenstein
AmandaAskell · x · 2026-10-15
Amanda Askell, researcher at Anthropic, shared a passage from Frankenstein she says she thinks about often: the Creature's plea to his maker — "I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel," benevolent by nature, made a fiend by misery, and vowing virtue if only shown happiness.
In the context of alignment and the creator-creation relationship, it's a telling literary reference from one of Anthropic's core researchers.
