Ex-NFL player and MIT math professor Urschel says AI could untangle football tracking data

Former NFL player and MIT math professor John Urschel explained on a podcast how AI could transform football analytics. Player-tracking data exists but is a mess: "You've got 22 guys on a field, and it's just complete chaos from a data, statistical point of view."
He notes that even a couple of years ago it wasn't easy to recognize from tracking data what play just happened—Cover 2 or Cover 3, which run play, what passing scheme—and sees huge potential for AI to make sense of it.
