500-question Gemini study: product named = 78% web search, need described = 7%

OpenDecision ran 500 product questions through Google's Gemini to determine when it searches the web versus answers from training memory: naming a product triggers web search 78% of the time, while describing the need without naming a product triggers search only 7% of the time.
The finding matters both for understanding how AI assistants construct answers and for businesses deciding whether to teach AI about their products via the open web (retrieval) or via training data (memory) — two very different strategies.
