AI study of 100,000 patients links brown fat to lower depression risk
EricTopol · x · 2026-10-15
A new Nature study used AI to phenotype brown adipose tissue (BAT) across 101,243 patients, quantifying BAT activity in 8,700. Beyond known links to less cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, BAT was associated with lower prevalence of psychiatric disease including depression. Angiotensin receptor blockers were positively associated with BAT presence, and losartan increased brown fat activity in proof-of-concept tests — a platform for drug repurposing.
