NCM: new text generation paradigm up to 31x faster than diffusion LMs with better quality

Stanford researchers introduce Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a new fast, parallel, coarse-to-fine text generation paradigm positioned between autoregressive and diffusion approaches.
- Up to 31x faster than similarly sized diffusion LMs on downstream tasks like summarization and translation, with comparable or better quality.
- 10–21x faster unconditional generation on TinyStories, LM1B, and OpenWebText with matching generative perplexity, using 3–5x fewer training tokens.
- Beats both AR and diffusion baselines on reasoning tasks like Sudoku with fewer sampling steps.
Charts show NCM reaching lower generative perplexity with 11x fewer NFEs and 10x faster per-sequence generation.
