ModelSpend: open-source tool tracks LLM spend and routes to the cheapest suitable model
Fine_Airline_6832 · reddit · 2026-10-14
While building a personal project on LLM APIs, the author wanted to know where the money goes and whether every request truly needed the chosen model — so they built ModelSpend, an open-source tool that tracks AI spending and routes requests to the cheapest suitable model.
The hard part is "suitable": picking the cheapest model is easy, but deciding when it's good enough for a task is not. They're asking developers how they handle that tradeoff, and what it would take to trust a router to pick cheaper models.
